Reflection
Last spring, I decided I wanted to begin golfing again and thought it would be good to take a lesson to accelerate my relearning process.
The pro who worked with me had me hit several balls as he stood and took notes while watching each swing. Then, after about fifteen minutes, he began coaching me, and one of the first things he did was advise me to place my golf ball back farther in my swing stance. To those of you who play golf, you know what this means; to those who don’t, it doesn’t matter–bottom line–moving the ball six inches from where I usually had it lie made me, as well as my swing, feel VERY uncomfortable.
It made me feel so uncomfortable that I began striking the ball better than I had for years.
Eventually, this uncomfortable change became my new normal, and I had a decent and enjoyable golf season last year.
Discomfort can be your friend.
Over the last two years, I’ve spent a lot of time listening to various leadership podcasts. It amazes me how many business leaders ended up creating more substantial businesses due to all of the changes they made because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Just yesterday, I talked to a business owner working on a project with me, and I had not seen or heard from her since December of 2019. So I asked her how she’s handled the past two years, and she shared with me that 2021 was their best year ever. She said, “Once we assessed the situation we made a significant pivot, and here we are today better than we’ve ever been.”
Faith Journey
One last note about discomfort. I have very few opinions, but I have observations, as my brother would say.
Here is an observation:
As Christ-followers, if we feel comfortable in our faith walk, we are not doing everything we can to follow His teachings.
Back to the opening quote…
Do you strive to live in comfort or stretch, pivot, and “change your stance” to strive for and achieve possibilities?
2 Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
