Thought
Fuller’s opening quote is so timely, considering what the COVID pandemic has done to our ability to plan for the future.
Over the past twelve months, many people have been dealing with a syndrome I refer to as “future angst.”
What if this virus never goes away?
What if we can never pack an athletic stadium again?
If I wear a mask, am I allowing the government to take my freedom from me?
Will the United States ever fully recover from this moment in history?
Being uncertain about our future creates angst in our souls. When the enemy senses our anxiety, it pounces on us like me, pouncing on a box of broasted chicken from the Mel-O-Dee restaurant. 🙂
A Look-Back
I’ve learned so many lessons from my addiction recovery journey, but none more than the ability to live in the present.
I can remember, during early recovery, being overwhelmed with the thought of not being able to drink or drug again.
Then someone told me, “Just don’t drink or drug today.”
I’ve been not drinking and drugging “today” for 12,259 days.
I’ve also been living in the present for the majority of those days…a great place to be, especially in the middle of a pandemic.
Solution
The solution to conquering “future angst” includes some key nuggets of “living in the present” wisdom that I’ve carried with me ever since I got sober:
- Don’t project
- Don’t expect
- Don’t assume
- Don’t worry
Reflection
Do you suffer from anxiety due to “future angst?”
If so, try putting the kibosh to projecting, expecting, assuming, and worrying…it works.
