Lent, Peace, and Saturday Morning Quarterbacking

Hindsight alone is not wisdom. And second-guessing is not a strategy.

— GW Bush —

A couple of days ago I made the mistake of turning on an afternoon radio talk show. Within minutes I had to turn it off as the host was overwhelming me with some major “Monday morning quarterbacking” about our nation’s handling of the COVID-19 virus.

He was actually complaining that projections are now showing that only 60,000 instead of the originally forecasted 2,000,000 people will die from COVID-19.

The medical experts who have been giving our leaders guidance throughout this pandemic have been in a no-win situation since day one.

Regardless of what they advise our leadership to do there will be some who think they are overreacting, others who think they aren’t doing enough, and a group that includes me who chooses to trust their judgement…keep in mind I’m a health care professional.

I must tell you that I’ve really mellowed over the years and find myself being more and more accepting of people, places, and things that don’t align with my beliefs and values. BUT there is one thing that still gets me wound up and it’s Monday morning quarterbacking, i.e. second-guessing.

Today is Holy Saturday.

After my opening rant, you are probably thinking I need a little bit of Holy in my Saturday…actually I need a whole lot of Holy in my every day. 🙂

Holy Saturday is a day that isn’t talked about hardly at all in the Bible.

On Good Friday, Jesus was unjustly identified as being a criminal and hung on the cross to die.

This is the same Jesus whose life book of work was representative of Him being the Messiah. But as I wrote yesterday, man got it wrong. He didn’t fit their image of the Messiah.

I’m guessing there was a whole lot of “Saturday” morning quarterbacking taking place on this day almost two thousand years ago.

I’m sure the majority were thinking, “I told you so—Jesus was a lunatic.”

Others were probably thinking, “Wow, I can’t believe I was that gullible and got sucked into believing in Him.”

A handful of true believers was most likely in shock and thinking, “I knew that I knew that I knew that I knew that He was the Messiah. How did this happen?”

…and then Sunday (Easter) came and tore all the Saturday morning second guessing and conspiracy theories to shreds.

With God, I’ve grown to expect the unexpected.

So after I quit listening to the talk show host who was second-guessing our doctors with some major Monday morning quarterbacking, my spirit immediately led me to the following thought, “What if God is simply answering prayer? I’m guessing He hasn’t been bombarded with prayer like this in a long time.  He has reduced the number of projected deaths from two million to sixty thousand because He is simply listening to His followers and working through our medical experts and government leaders in order to provide the best solution possible.”

In my heart I know, that I know, that I know, that I know that that is how He operates.

With God, I’ve grown to expect that anything is possible especially after what he pulled on the day after Holy Saturday.

Talk with you about that tomorrow.

Matthew 19:26, “But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

Journal your thoughts:

What am I grateful for today?

In what way(s) will I bring light to the world today?

What will I deny myself so I may draw closer to God and gain more peace in my life today?

Prayer:

God, I offer myself to Thee—To build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt. Relieve me of the bondage of self, that I may better do Thy will. Take away my difficulties that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help of Thy Power, Thy Love, and Thy Way of life. May I do Thy will always! Amen.
