Lent, Peace, and Sacrifice

The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you lived and lived well.

— Ralph Waldo Emerson —

Yesterday morning my thoughts gravitated to those workers who are facing this COVID-19 beast head-on. I found my heart especially bleeding for those in the health care industry—where I spent half of my life.

These thoughts and emotions were most likely stirred as I received word that a dear friend’s child, who is a health care worker, was showing signs of possibly having the virus. Please pray for this family.

Mother Teresa once said, “Give until it hurts.” Which means to give until it becomes a sacrifice.

No one represented this quote more than Jesus did a couple of thousand years ago when He knew he was about to face a gruesome and torturous death and said these words, “Now my soul is deeply troubled. Should I pray, ‘Father save me from what lies ahead? But that is the very reason why I came! Father, bring glory to your name.” (John 12:27-28)

In other words, Jesus was saying, “I know this is going to hurt really really bad but I would rather bring glory to Your name than worry about my hurt.”

Our health care workers on the frontlines are giving way beyond hurting and whether they believe in God or not, they are bringing glory to His name through their selfless sacrifices.

If you haven’t already done it, commit to praying for our frontline workers during this crisis and also make it a point to reach out to a frontline worker and thank them.

John 15:13, “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (NLT)

Journal your thoughts:

What am I grateful for today?

In what way(s) will I bring light to the world today?

What will I deny myself so I may draw closer to God and gain more peace in my life today?

Prayer:

God, I offer myself to Thee—To build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt. Relieve me of the bondage of self, that I may better do Thy will. Take away my difficulties that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help of Thy Power, Thy Love, and Thy Way of life. May I do Thy will always! Amen.
