Lent, Peace, and Calming the Storm

PEACE--It does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart.

The other day Lori was talking with a friend and the friend asked her how she was weathering this COVID-19 storm. Lori jokingly said, “It’s really not changed our lives much because we live with Jordan.”

For those of you who don’t know our family, on February 3, 1986, God saw fit to bless us with a special needs child and we’ve learned so much from him over the years.

Jordan has taught us to never get too high or too low.

Jordan has taught us how to be focused in the moment because it only takes him a second to fall and hurt himself–this just happened under my watch last week.

He’s taught us a bunch about unconditional love and trust.

He’s taught us about the joy that is delivered through a smile.

He’s taught us the blessings to be found in helping someone who can’t help themselves.

He’s taught us to be grateful for the little things like taking car rides and walking with nature (two things he loves doing with his mom).

He’s forced us to slow our lives down and be good stewards of our waking hours.

My hope for you is that this pandemic has gotten your attention and helped you sort out what is important in life…it is there where you find peace and calm…I write from experience.

Isaiah 32:17-18, “And the effect of righteousness will be peace, and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust forever. My people will abide in a peaceful habitation, in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places.”

Journal your thoughts:

What am I grateful for today?

In what way(s) will I bring light to the world today?

What will I deny myself so I may draw closer to God and gain more peace in my life today?

Prayer:

God, I offer myself to Thee—To build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt. Relieve me of the bondage of self, that I may better do Thy will. Take away my difficulties that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help of Thy Power, Thy Love, and Thy Way of life. May I do Thy will always! Amen.
