Don’t Let Old In

We don't stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing.

— George Bernard Shaw —

Random thoughts about this juncture in my life…

  • Damn, the past nine months have been a drag.
  • There’s been lots of sickness, disease, and death happening to people who are close to me. We also had to put our beloved dog Onyx down.
  • All of the above comes with aging.
  • Every day upon rising my body reminds me that I’m 60 years old. My dad just turned 90 which means if I’m lucky I have 1/3 of my life left. By the time I’m done with my morning Slim/Spark drink, a protein bar, and devotion/prayer time, I’m back to thinking I’m in my forties.
  • I received a text the other day from a friend who is 15 years my senior. She said she and her husband have a new driving force when they get up in the morning–they say, “We aren’t letting the old man/old woman in.” I like that…I may steal that.
  • A couple of weeks ago I passed a friend of mine while riding my bike on the bike path near Taylorsville Dam. I pulled up next to him to catch up and he told me he is running another marathon this year…he will be 60. I told him I was doing another Ironman triathlon. About 44 years prior we were competing against each other in cross country…he always kicked my butt.

I don’t know about you, but I’m not letting the old man in…yep, I stole it.

Shaw was so right…I’m going to keep playing regardless of what my life and body are trying to tell me.

Ecclesiastes 11:10, “So then, banish anxiety from your heart and cast off the troubles of your body…”
