Crushing Fear – Day 19 – Fear of Failure and Inferiority Complex

If there is no struggle, there is no progress.

— Frederick Douglas —

Two more by-products of fear is the fear of failure and feeling inferior.

When we fail, the devil often gets us to buy into thinking we are inferior and in order to not feel inferior we don’t try because we fear failure which leads to having an inferiority complex…what a vertigous cycle…a cycle the devil loves for us to jump on and ride for a lifetime.

Over the past two days I spent twenty hours in front of my computer participating in a live stream geriatric-focused pharmacy class. The actual class was taking place in Seattle, Washington…technology is amazing.

About a year ago, after an eight year hiatus, I decided to re-enter the pharmacy industry. From a clinical standpoint pharmacy has changed dramatically since I walked away in 2010. Over the past year I found myself fearing failure and feeling inferior because I had become quite rusty in my knowledge of drug use in the older population.

It would have been easy for me to give into these feelings of inferiority because I had other pharmacists who knew the drugs inside and out–all I had to do was “stay in my lane.”

Most of you know me pretty well by now–I don’t like to be forced to “stay in a lane.” So I took on my feelings of inferiority and fear of failure and I signed up for a class called “Geriatric Pharmacist Boot Camp.”

The past two days were more intense and grueling to my AARP-qualified brain than the Ironman Triathlon I did six months ago.

But I did it! I took twenty hours of classes and feel significantly more confident in my clinical abilities…all because I confronted feelings of inferiority and the fear of failure head on.

Fear of failure and fear of not being good enough are tools the devil uses in order to keep us in our “lanes.” The devil wants to keep our lives as small as possible.

God is a God of abundance and wants us to either broaden the lanes we are in or to get out of them and explore new lanes.

The longer I live the more I realize that life is one big lesson and the really “big” lives are built by choosing to take on feelings of inferiority and fear of failure head on.

What are you fearing?

Do you have feelings of inferiority?

Try facing these feelings head on by doing something about it. You will find yourself exploring “lanes” in life that you never knew existed…I write from experience.

Live Big.

Matthew 6:33 (NIV), “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

Reflection:

What beliefs, thoughts and actions cause you to struggle with fear of failure or feelings of not being good enough?

Additional Scripture to read and reflect upon:  2 Timothy 1:7, Isaiah 41:10, Psalm 118:6
