Proverbs 21…everything in moderation

Proverbs 21:17, “He who loves pleasure will become poor; whoever loves wine and oil will never be rich.”

Years ago, as I was trying to rebuild my life I had lunch with a very wealthy, successful, businessman.  I often tell people that I am where I am today because I’ve asked alot of questions along the way.  Anyway I was picking this man’s mind in order to see what he did in order to become so successful.  Finally after an hour of asking questions, I asked him, “so if you could give credit to one particular thing as to why you’ve been successful in business and in life, what would it be?”  He said Jay I’ve tried my best to do everything I do in moderation.”

Hmmm…that was some tough wisdom for an addict to handle.  But you can see Solomon was talking about this topic thousands of years ago.  Loving pleasure or should I say loving the things that create pleasure in excess will do nothing but drain us.

Moderation means showing restraint, avoiding excesses and extremes…pretty simple concept.

How are you moderating these days?

One of the main reasons I open my day in prayer and ask the “Big Guy” to show me the way is because the word moderation was not a part of my vocabulary for a long time and I’m only 24 hours away from forgetting what it means.
