Wheel of Life – Fear & Can’t

Don't let your fear of what could happen make nothing happen.

Over the next few weeks we will be studying excerpts from my book, “FEAR – PROOF” as we look at how damaging fear can be to the Mental component of our Wheel of Life.

You become what you think about the most. Taking control of the mental component of your Wheel of Life is a key ingredient of living a life of purpose while realizing your dreams.

Don’t let your fear of what could happen make nothing happen.  ~Unknown

Years ago, I recall telling my oldest son and daughter the word can’t was a bad word.  Both of them wanted to play college basketball and the workouts they used to have with me were mostly workouts that involved getting them to play through what they thought they couldn’t do.

Saying we can’t do something is an easy way out.  The devil loves to get us to buy into the world of can’t.

If you’ve been following my blogs for any length of time you most likely know about our middle child Jordan.  Jordan is developmentally disabled and thinks at the level of a 2 year old.

Many years ago my dad called me up and said, “Jay, the strangest thing happened last night.  The thought that Jordy will never walk has been weighing heavily on your mom and I and you know we’ve been doing a lot of praying about it.”  I said, “Yes Dad, I know; we all have.”  He then said, “Well son, I woke up from a deep sleep last night and a voice said ‘walk him.’  I’m certain it was God telling me to walk Jordy.”

This began a nightly routine of my dad coming to our house and first walking beside Jordan while he walked with his walker, then holding his hand, then holding a wooden spoon that they each held, to when finally Jordy began walking on his own.  And the rest is history as Jordy is now a “walkaholic.”

Two lessons from this:

  1. Can’t is all mental.  Jordan has no capacity to think in the world of can’t and is why he had no fear in going out to practice walking with my dad every evening.
  2. Prayer is powerful and when coupled with practice, will help you overcome any can’t the devil is trying to get you to buy into.

Whenever the devil is trying to convince you that you cannot do something, replace those thoughts with God’s word from Philippians 4:13, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me, and just keep on praying, practicing and working through it.

Read and reflect upon:  Jeremiah 29:11-14, 2 Timothy 1:7

What self-limiting beliefs, thoughts and actions cause you to struggle with “can’t”?

How about the final game to March Madness last night?  I sensed very little fear in the minds of those players.  Villanova wins at the buzzer!
