Slave

—for a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him—2 Peter 2:19 (NIV)

I try to do ongoing inventories throughout the day as a quick check on who or what is driving my life.  If I am at peace and really cannot name anything that is bothering (i.e. mastering) me, then I know God is at my core and is driving (i.e. mastering) me.

When I am not at peace and feeling unrest I name the feeling and try to identify the person, place or thing that is at my core and driving (i.e. mastering) me and my feelings and thoughts and turn it over to my master (i.e. God).  Most of us who suffer from addictions turn to our addiction to help numb us from whatever is mastering us and then our addictions become another master…and so the downward spiral begins…

Somedays are better than others but today I know I have a choice in determining who my master is and I try my best to always make that choice God.  And when I make that choice I am free from being a slave to other people, places, things and feelings.

In essence, when I choose God as my master, I am freeing myself from the bondage of self and the consequences of running a life fueled by self because when I run on my own will I am fair game to be a slave to anything…been there done that and don’t want to go back.

Thank you God for always being there; ready, willing and able to be my loving master.
