Whipping the devil – Day 4 – Self Pity

“The quicker we get out of “why me?” and into “why not me?”–the quicker we can get out of the problem and into the solution.”  ~Jay Meyer

The devil loves for us to wallow on the “pity pot.”  Self pity is the ultimate form of selfishness and it is born out of fear and creates a laser focus on self which leads to isolation and in most cases depression which in turn causes us to shut ourselves down from the outside world.  The devil loves hosting pity parties.

The best way to stay off the pity pot is to get out of yourself by helping others and of course continue to pray for, picture, prepare and practice a life of “why not me?”

A friend and former teammate of mine from my pharmacy days has been fighting cancer for a little over three years.  She has put up a valiant effort in fighting this horrible disease.  But beyond her fight against cancer she has grown exponentially in her faith walk and only the Lord knows how many people she has brought to Him during this ordeal.  She sends out weekly emails to a group of us and I’ve taken it upon myself to share a small part of her most recent email:

“So, I won’t lie.  I did have a moment this week.  Ok, well two moments.  One on the way home too.  I am not super-human.  These things really do effect me.  I consciously make the decision each day that today is a good day.  I woke up on my own.  My life is full of joy.  It is obvious that my job here is not done.  There is someone yet I have to meet… or someone you need to forward this email to… I am truly inspired with emails I receive from people that I have no idea who they are.  I met someone at a ball game last weekend.  Are you Aunt Amy?  I am.  I pray for you every day.  Thank you!  Please keep them coming.”

If you are on the pity-pot, read the paragraph above and get out of yourself and say a prayer for Amy or better yet send her an encouraging email at afashner@yahoo.com.

Make a conscious decision to fight pity with joy…just like Amy.  In essence it is fighting the devil with God and God wins that fight every day of the week.
