Guiding Principles–What We Stand For

Wisdom is knowing the right path to take… Integrity is taking it.

We are just over a week into this process of creating a playing field for our life.  Our ultimate goal is to create a clear vision (dream with a plan) that is grounded in our purpose.

StratField Personal Playing Field (blue letters)If you take a close look at the StratField™ playing field to the left  you will notice four key components that make up the boundaries of our playing field:  Guiding Principles, Priorities, Strengths & Gifts and Passions.

Sometimes the answer to the questions, “What’s my Purpose?” or “What am I here for?” is found by first claiming our Guiding Principles, Priorities, Strengths & Gifts and Passions.

Over the next four weeks we will be taking a look at these four key areas that create the boundaries of our playing field.

This week our focus is on our guiding principles, i.e. what we stand for.

During the dark days of my life I didn’t stand for much of anything.  I did whatever I needed to do to get my next fix.

Having no principles to live by, creates a life of absolute chaos with no direction…I write from experience.

Today (these evolved over time) my guiding principles are found in the book of Micah 6:8, “No, O people, the Lord has already told you what is good, and this is what he requires:  to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.”

  1. Do Right-Don’t B.S. myself or others…Do the next right thing.
  2. Be Merciful-Try to understand where others are coming from…Don’t pass judgment…Do Love.
  3. Walk Humbly-Let my life be more about God and helping His people than it is about me and helping me…It’s not about me.

I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase, “If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything.”

What do you stand for?  Take a moment to jot your guiding principles down in your journal.

Our guiding principles help to create key boundaries and clarity for our life playing field. Knowing and committing to living these principles prevents us from having multiple playing fields.

Knowing and committing to living these principles creates a walk that is aligned with our talk.
