Recovery Month – Day 23 – Community

You will never understand the unabashed power of community until you are part of one.

— Unknown —

September is National Recovery Month.

The focus of my blogs throughout the month of September will be on addiction and its life destroying tendencies. The writings derive from my own personal experiences of battling addiction and living a life of recovery.

These specific writings are focused on the ACT acronym.

ACT leads to sobriety…

A – Acknowledge you have a problem and you are powerless over it and you need help.

– Connect with a power greater than you and people who have solutions that will help you conquer your problem.

T – Take positive, recovery-oriented action every day.

We spent the first 17 days of September looking at the Acknowledge and Connect stages of ACT. We will close out Recovery Month by looking at the most important stage and that is to Take positive, recovery-oriented action every day.

Today’s post is a continuation from yesterday (September 22).

Yesterday, I wrote about the director of our program “slapping” thirty of us in the face with the cold, dire facts of our current reality.

He challenged us, and I was determined I was up for the challenge, but had no clue what actions I needed to take in order to conquer what I was facing.

Then God brought The Woman at the Well to me…more about her in a few minutes.

There are a few pictures of my athletic playing days that stand out from all of the rest. All are pictures where I am celebrating key moments and championships with my teammates in high school and in college.

I was blessed to have some pretty neat experiences throughout my basketball career.

The moments I celebrated with my teammates were much more meaningful to me than my moments of personal glory.

Why is that?

The simple answer is God formed us for community. He didn’t create us to do life alone.

All throughout the gospels Jesus works with groups and even in those moments where he works with individuals, the individuals get so excited they go back and share with their community of friends…click on the link of the story of The Woman at the Well-John 4

I had a key Women at the Well/Community moment early in my recovery, and I will share it with you tomorrow.

There is power in community, especially community which has overcome challenges we are facing.

Do you have a small group of people who support, challenge and redirect you when needed?

Hebrews 10:24-25, “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”
