Random Thoughts

“The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don’t know.”  ~Albert Einstein

A couple of times a year I perform a cleansing of my brain through a purging process that involves transferring “random thoughts” from the committee in my head, to my blog and to all of my faithful readers.

So here goes my most recent unapologetic, regurgitation of random thoughts:

With Easter a day behind us it is worth reminding you all about the great power we gained through the suffering of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  This power is not just for us to celebrate and appreciate on Easter but it is a power that must be celebrated and appreciated daily and it only stays alive and will be strengthened if we die to ourselves and let Him live in us so we may pass the power on to others.

Atlanta Archbishop,  Wilton Gregory was living in a $2.2 Million residence and his parishioners  had to explain to him this was not appropriate.  After putting the home up for sale Gregory said, “I failed to consider the impact on the families throughout the archdiocese who though struggling to pay their mortgages, utilities, tuition and other bills, faithfully respond year after year to my pleas to assist with funding our ministries and services.”  Duh!  I’m sorry but when you signed up to be a Priest or a Pastor you signed up to change lives, not to live a life of luxury.  I often wonder what God thinks of theologians who make a profit from explaining His word.  My guess is God doesn’t care as long as it’s truth and the profit goes to help those in need.

The ultimate humble leader…Pope Francis.  I’m thoroughly enjoying reading his various views on the happenings of the world and would enjoy sitting and picking his brain.  He reminds me of the type of leader Simon Sinek writes about in his new gem, “Leaders Eat Last.”  Sinek makes his point about the danger of leaders viewing their people as simply a means to an end instead of human beings with beating hearts, feelings, hopes, dreams and sufferings.  I cringe inside whenever I hear a leader use the words, I, me, my instead of we, us, ours.

I just spoke with a friend who has a family member who is fighting a losing battle against cancer and cannot afford to buy insurance.  Wait a minute!  What about the Affordable Health Care Act?  My wife and I will pay 33% more when we are forced to buy our insurance through the Government exchanges in 2015.  Government should never, ever be in business.

Churches are worried about not reaching the millennial generation.  When has the church ever done a good job of reaching the twenty-something’s?  Maybe its why Christ waited until He was 33 to turn the world upside down.

I just read where a young, budding, baseball superstar-Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals was benched for lack of hustle.  Wow that is a novel approach in making a point about effort.

The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.  Have you found that place yet?

I hope you enjoyed spending time with my committee 🙂
