Pray or Worry

If you pray, why worry? If you worry, why pray?

— Unknown —

A couple of mornings ago my devotion took me to the book of Matthew where Jesus asks us: “Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?” and He follows with, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously (do the next right thing), and He will give you everything you need.” (Matthew 6:27 & 33).

Back in my early recovery days, the old timers at the AA meetings I attended gave their version of Matthew 6 when they often said, “If you pray why worry, if you worry why pray?”

I used the AA version of Mathew 6 many years prior to ever knowing about Jesus’ words.

The longer I live the more I realize how hard the devil tries to get us to have a relationship with worry and anxiety in order to create a gap between God and us. You canNOT worry and be fully connected to God at the same time.

When you worry, you are pleasing the devil.

When you pray, you are pleasing God.

Philippians 4:6, “Don’t worry about anything; instead pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”
