Monday Morning Leadership – Know Where the Buck Stops

When you're in charge and things aren't going well, the problem is easily found by looking in the mirror.

I remember the first time our executive team went through a strategic planning session with an outside facilitator. It was a two day, very intense session.

Strategic planning is like painting a picture. There is a structure to follow but for the most part the structure allows open thinking and creativity to prevail.

In it’s simplest form, strategic planning is a process where you look at where you are, how you got there and then develop a plan for where you want to go and how you will get there.

Anyway, during the morning of day one, our facilitator spent a significant amount of time asking questions and mapping out where we were and how we got there. During that process it was evident to me that we had a lot of things that needed changed. It also dawned on me, since I was the President, that most, if not all of the problems, were because of me.

I had an epiphany in that moment–The only way our business was going to change is if I changed and thank God I decided to change.

I’ve said it several times on the blog–If I’m not the problem, there is no solution. This holds so true for leadership. The best leaders always know where the buck stops.

Proverbs 19:21, Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.
