HabitFast Journey-Day 5-Negative Triggers

Those who expect moments of change to be comfortable and free of conflict have not learned their history.

— Joan Wallach Scott —

HABITHere we are on Day 5 of our HabitFast Journey and we haven’t even officially started starving or starting our habit(s) yet.  As I mentioned earlier, the reason most goals are never attained is because of lack of planning and up to this point in our HabitFast Journey, we’ve been developing a plan.

If breaking habits were easy, there would be no bad habits.

Today you will need to create another page in your HabitFast journal section and title it Negative Triggers.”  On your Negative Triggers page you will need to write down everything and/or everyone that triggers bad thoughts and impulses.  It is important that we name and claim everything around us that could trigger an impulse causing us to go back to our old thinking and behavior.  We all have certain people, places and things that serve as triggers and there is no better way to combat triggers than to simply keep them out of our lives if we are able.

For example, one of the habits I am fasting during this journey is my tendency of having negative/unproductive thoughts.   Some examples of triggers to my negativity include the news, reading narcissistic/stupid Facebook posts, being cynical with others, negative people, and allowing H.A.L.T. (being Hungry, Angry, Lonely & Tired) to creep in.  I will be noting these as Negative Triggers in my HabitFast journal. image

Another huge negative trigger is the “old tapes box” we carry with us from the past.  Old tapes are stories we tell ourselves that are either over with and in the past and/or not true.  The devil loves to assist us in pushing the “play” button for our old tapes because they prevent us from making personal progress.

Here is an example of what your HabitFast Journey journal section could be leooking like:

1.  I aspire to be at peace in all situations.

2.  In order to be at peace in all situations I will starve ALL negative and unproductive thoughts about myself and others.

3. By starving my negative thoughts I will have a calmer, more focused life in 5 years and all of my relationships will be stronger because people will want to be around me but more importantly God will make better use of me.

4.  My replacement habit(s) is/are:  Prayer and seeking God’s help in replacing all negative thoughts with productive thoughts.

5.  Those benefitting the most from my habit change include:  God, me, my children, my family, co-workers, the world, and family generations to come.

6.  I commit to staying away from Negative Triggers as noted on my Negative Triggers page in my HabitFast journal section.

Conquering a bad habit and/or starting a new one is a process, it is not an event.

1 Corinthians 10:13, “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to us all.  And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear.  But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”  (NIV)
