Folly and Straight Course

“You can’t depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus.”  ~Mark Twain

Through my consulting practice I am blessed to spend a significant amount of time with dreamers.  Most entrepreneurs are dreamers.  They have the ability to picture something that not everyone is able to see.  The difficult part of being a dreamer is putting a plan to the picture and creating focus around the execution or the practice of the plan.  The following is a simple guide to follow when executing on a dream:

1.  Pray-about whatever you are dreaming about.  Is it real or is it just another delusional day-dream?

2.  Picture-what the end result will look like if you decide to act on the dream.

3.  Pray (again)-Commit the Picture to the Lord through Prayer (this creates more focus and will help with the plan).

4.  Plan-create a Plan to achieve the dream.

5.  Practice-commit to Practicing the execution of the plan on a daily basis.

Although these five steps are vital in successfully bringing a dream to reality, there are two other steps that need to be taken prior to executing on a dream.  In fact these two steps should be taken by everyone who is in any type of leadership role…and we all lead from wherever we sit…we all have the responsibility of leading our lives.

The two steps are really all about answering two questions:

1.  What am I here for?  Or for an organization:  What are we here for?

2.  What do I stand for?  Or for an organization:  What do we stand for?

Answering the first question is all about defining your purpose.  Once the purpose is defined then you are better able to decide whether or not the latest dream fits with the purpose.  I have found the most successful individuals and organizations have created the ability to say no.  And when you know your purpose it is much easier to say no.  Entrepreneurs are dreamers but it doesn’t mean every dream needs to be executed on…I write from experience.

Answering the second question is all about defining your values and principles.  In other words defining how you will behave while executing on the plan and what type of people you will work with and for, while on the journey.  There are some dreams that you simply don’t act on because they don’t align with your values and principles.

This blog came to me when I read my morning Proverb yesterday:  Proverb 15:21, “Folly delights man who lacks judgment, but a man of understanding keeps a straight course.”

Folly has taken many a man and woman off course over the years…I write from experience.
