Whipping the devil – Day 46 – Desert

“Thirst is something we all must deal with.  How we quench it often determines the path our life takes.”  ~JJM

I have to think on the day after Jesus was crucified, the devil was still celebrating his “victory” while those who were Jesus followers were in a state of shock having no idea what had just happened.

I often view the day between Good Friday (darkness) and Easter (light) as a desert day.

We all have these “desert” days or maybe it’s just me.

We’ve finally come out of our darkness, we’ve seen the light and want to follow the light but suddenly the light becomes shadowed or clouded.  We begin to second-guess and skepticism sets in.

Can anyone relate?

I’ve had desert times in my life but none worse than the two or three years I spent trying to get my life on track after I had decided to quit drugging and drinking.  I was thirsting for a solution.  The devil was tempting me with “the old dark way” yet I was craving for a new way.  It was like I could not tell darkness from the light.

There were some days I walked in this desert an hour at a time and sometimes a minute at a time.  I would question whether or not I truly believed God could deliver me from this self-induced hell on earth the devil and I had created.

I have to think there were many Jesus followers on the day after Good Friday that were having second thoughts.

I’m sure there are countless numbers of people who finally give their life to the light but find there is still struggle and work.  Or like on “Desert-Saturday” they wonder if there really is a God.

All of the above thinking is normal for the Jesus-follower and it can be overcome.

Just like light cannot be appreciated without darkness; resurrection cannot be fully appreciated without death and between light and darkness as well as death and resurrection there is a time, a desert time.

It is the time we get our will aligned with God’s will (the light).  It is also a time we can look back on and be grateful we hung in there and chose to not give into the temptation of settling for a short term “darkness-fix.”  It is a time we can look back on and point to as the time we surrendered our thirst to the eternal fix and be very grateful for the eternal fix option…I write from experience.

1 Corinthians 10:13, “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to us all.  And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear.  But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”
