Crushing Fear – Day 41 – Pride

A proud man is always looking down on things and people; and, of course, as long as you are looking down, you cannot see something that is above you.

— C.S. Lewis —

DSC_8138When I was in my final downward spiral with addiction I couldn’t ask anyone for help because I viewed it as a form of weakness.  The devil had convinced me of this and this thinking nearly killed me.  In essence I was too proud to call myself an alcoholic or addict.

I’ve also witnessed the type of pride Lewis is talking about in the opening quote.  This type of pride destroys relationships.  I’ve seen a fair share of leaders get drunk on their success and because of pride and ego they forget about the people who helped make them successful.

The devil loves to use pride in order to make us feel as though we are better than others and/or do not need help.

It’s OK to be confident in oneself but never to the point where we think we are above others or especially above needing help from God.

If you are battling pride and feel as though you are losing; pray for God to remove your pride, picture laying it at His feet, and let him work through your weaknesses and you will become stronger than you ever imagined.

For when we are weak (in God’s presence) we become strong.

2 Corinthians 12:9-10 (NIV), “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’  Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.  That is why for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties.  For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

 Reflection:

What beliefs, thoughts and actions cause you to struggle with having too much pride?

Additional Scripture to read and reflect upon:  Proverbs 11:2, Proverbs 16:18
