Crushing Fear – Day 37 – Fear Coaches

A lot of people have gone farther than they thought they could because someone else thought they could.

30 years ago...a bunch of misfits with alot of belief and no doubts...

37 years ago…a bunch of free spirits focused on the relentless pursuit of perfection…and yes we beat Oklahoma at Oklahoma.

We are beginning week two of College basketball’s March Madness as well as the 37th day of our 2018 Fear Crushing Journey.

There is so much talent in college basketball these days. A dozen or so teams have enough talent to win it all.  When it is all said and done, the team that executes most precisely will win it all.

There is very little room for error.

Precise execution comes from solid coaching and solid coaching involves many things, but none more important than getting the players to pay attention to the smallest of details.  Basketball is a game of inches and milliseconds.

I reaped the fruits of this type of coaching when I played basketball many years ago. My high school and college basketball coaches were both very attentive to details and were relentless in their pursuit of getting us to play flawlessly.

My college basketball coach, Gale Daugherty, was a relentless pursuer of perfection on the defensive end of the floor.  If I heard it once, I heard it a couple hundred times, “offense sells tickets, but defense wins championships.”  During the final practice of my college basketball career we did the same defensive drills as we did the first day of practice as freshmen.  And if we didn’t do them correctly, we repeated them.

During my time at ONU, Coach D’s relentless pursuit of perfection resulted in two conference championships, two NCAA Division III, ‘Sweet 16’ appearances, three upset wins over bigger Division I foes, and a place among the top ranked teams in the nation.

How many times have you given up on a dream or a vision because you didn’t seek help/coaching from someone who may have been able to help you overcome the fear associated with chasing a dream?

The devil loves for us to underachieve and tries to get us to believe we don’t need anyone’s help.  God wants us to overachieve, but doesn’t do the work for us.

This is where having good coaching and guidance becomes really important.  I view solid life coaches and mentors as God’s assistants (i.e. Fear Coaches).  A good coach or mentor helps us overcome the various fears associated with chasing a dream.  They see paths and solutions we are unable to see.  They teach us practice techniques that help us execute our plan(s) more effectively.

Our greatest talent often lies in the middle of something we fear and oftentimes the only way to find that talent is by working with a solid mentor.

Who is mentoring you today?  Is he or she helping you see things you are unable to see?

Nothing great in life happens by doing it alone…especially winning an NCAA championship.

Proverbs 27:7, “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.”

Personal Reflection:

What beliefs, thoughts and actions get in your way of chasing your God-dream?

Additional scripture to read and reflect on:  Proverbs 9:9, Proverbs 13:20, Proverbs 1:5
