Crushing Fear – Day 24 – Doubting God

Any belief worth having must survive doubt.

DSC_8081As I mentioned last week in my post on tragedy, the devil loves to mess with those of us who sometimes doubt whether or not there really is a God.

I’ve always said straddling the fence with our faith is the worst place to be.  First of all it is painful to our crotch area, 🙂 but more importantly it creates a huge opportunity for the devil to get inside our heads and play games with us.

As far as faith goes, you are either in or you’re out; there is no such thing as faith in-between.

How can anyone have a “little bit” of faith?

One of the most effective ways I have found to help me overcome any doubt I have with God’s existence, is to try to find Him in all situations.

A few years ago the husband of a friend of mine had his childhood home destroyed by a tornado.  To make matters worse, his dad lost his life.  It was a very sad situation.

The morning after I heard the news, I grabbed my tool bag and chain saw and jumped in my Jeep to go lend my friends a hand.  I had no clue what I was getting into but sometimes God calls and we simply answer the call.

I will never forget the moment I arrived at the scene of the tornado and walked up to a cement slab where a home once stood.  All around the slab were various remnants that once formed a home.  Some of the contents of the home was strewed throughout trees in a wooded area which stood directly behind it.  I can remember thinking “where is God in all this?”

Then, about thirty minutes after I arrived, out of nowhere, came a group of people all dressed in orange shirts with “Samaritan’s Purse” written on them.  Samaritan’s Purse is an international group which provides disaster relief.  This particular group of people had journeyed from various places all around the U.S.

Upon arrival they had me join them and we formed a circle in prayer.  After the prayer, we created a game plan and began to clean up the mess for Rodney and his family.  Throughout the day the Red Cross, the Salvation Army and many other concerned citizens stopped by and either dropped off water and food or began working with the rest of us.

I had never felt so much love on a one acre lot in my entire life.

God was there as He always is.

James 1:5-8 (NIV), “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.  But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.  Those who doubt should not think they will receive anything from the Lord; they are double-minded and unstable in all they do.”

Reflection:

What beliefs, thoughts and actions cause you to struggle with believing and trusting in God?

Additional Scripture to read and reflect upon:  James 1:6, Jude 1:22, Matthew 14:31
