Crushing Fear – Day 13 – Channels

We were built by God to be channels not reservoirs.

DSC_6505I’ll never forget the time one of our bathroom sinks became totally clogged and would not drain. For months I would say to myself, “I need to take the time to clean out the drain,” and then I’d get distracted and forget.

I thought about my clogged drain when  I saw the opening quote from Joyce Meyer.

God built us to be channels of His Spirit not reservoirs, which means we must create a vessel (our body, mind, and spirit) that is fine tuned to the point where the Spirit flows through us freely.

So what gets in the way?  What clogs our channel?  Why do we struggle with keeping our body, mind, and spirit clean?

In my opinion, it’s pretty simple; fear and sin.

In essence the fruits of the spirit (love, joy, peace, forgiveness, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control) which are God’s virtues, are the by-products of a life run by God with us serving as his channel.

Fear and sin, which are virtues of the devil, are the by-products of a life run by self and fueled by the devil. Our channels turn into reservoirs as we isolate and do our own thing.

The best way to keep our channels open and flowing is by turning our fears and sinful ways over to God as often as we need.

2 Corinthians 7:1, “Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.”  (NIV)

Reflection:

What beliefs, thoughts and actions cause you to struggle with being a channel for the Holy Spirit?

Additional Scripture to read and reflect upon:  Exodus 31:3, 1 Corinthians 2:11-14, Galatians 5:16-26
