Crushing Fear – Day 10 – Judging

If you want to continue to be mired in your own junk spend more time taking inventory of the shortcomings of others instead of taking a look at your own.

DSC_8121Today is day ten in our Lenten journey of facing fear and the various negative consequences it creates in our lives.

Many years ago when my back was lying flat on the ground and I had lost just about everything because of my own stupid actions I remember thinking, “I will try my best to never pass judgement on another human being because I am one of the biggest screw-ups ever.”  I’m not where I want to be, but I’m much less judgmental than I used to be.

Judging others is activity born from a fear of inadequacy.  The more we become OK with ourselves, the less we need to focus on the shortcomings of others.

The devil loves for us to waste time focusing on the speck in our sister or brother’s eye…”You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”  (Matthew 7:5)

A paradox of a personality that often drives me crazy is the “judgmental Christian.”  Think of how foolish we look when we profess to be Christian yet waste time judging others because we don’t agree with their form of sin.

Sin is sin and until I have no sin I have no right to judge others.  God is the ultimate judge and we need to let Him do the judging, while we try our best to witness with love.

Matthew 7:1-2 (NIV), “Judge not, that you be not judged.  For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you.”

Reflection:

What beliefs, thoughts and actions cause you to struggle with judging others?

Additional Scripture to read and reflect on:  Romans 2:1, Romans 3:23, Matthew 7:3
