A part of the leadership coaching process involves having those I coach do an inventory of their life. During the inventory process my clients complete a couple of assessments that indicates to me and to them what their God-given strengths are.
A couple of years ago I was working with a young leader and asked him to share his strengths with me. Had taken the Gallup StrengthsFinder Assessment.
It’s important to note that this particular client was struggling in his professional life. After taking a look at his strengths I looked at him and ask him how those strengths were being leveraged and utilized in his professional life. After taking another look at them, he looked at me, shaking his head and with a frown on his face said, “This is why I hate my job isn’t it?”
What he found was his God-given strengths were not being utilized in his professional life and on top of that he also found his personal values (as noted in his inventory of his life) were not aligned with the values of the organization.
This is a recipe for hating your job and when we hate our job (where we spend the majority of our waking hours), we tend to not like other aspects of our life, which was reflected in this particular client’s personal inventory.
We then spent the next thirty minutes discussing what he needed to do in order to move on to a new job and a new life. He suddenly began to visualize a new future he never knew existed, and with this new vision came an energy he had not felt in a long time.
Moving from misery to joy is not an easy process but it is worth the work.
God didn’t wire us to be miserable…but the devil sure loves it when we are.
Are you spending most of your waking hours in joy or misery? If you are miserable and can’t change “it” and unwilling to accept “it”…move on…you’ll have no regrets.
Ecclesiastes 8:15, “And I commend joy, for man has no good thing under the sun but to eat and drink and be joyful, for this will go with him in his toil through the days of his life that God has given him under the sun.” (ESV)
