I am preparing to do two-1/2 ironman triathlons this summer/fall. I will spend anywhere from 8 to 15 hours per week training and the events will take me somewhere between 5 and 6 hours. One of my “bucket list” goals is to do a full ironman before I die and if I die doing it…then I will still consider myself an ironman. The ironman distances include a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 mile run. By doing two 1/2′s this year, I am proving to myself mentally that I can do it. Obviously training and nutrition are important components of successfully completing an ironman, but after that it comes down to sheer will power. I’ve done four 1/2 ironmans and in each one of those races I reached a point where my ability to finish the race was simple “mind over matter.”

I’ve always been mentally tough. I know there is nothing I can’t do if I put my mind to it. I am not boasting, I am just telling you I understand the importance the mind plays in making anything great happen in life. The key is to always nourish the mind with positive, healthy thoughts and having personal anchoring techniques in place when the negative thoughts come creeping in.

Ok, you may be wondering what this is all about. Well here is the deal. The last few months I’ve had more phone calls from people struggling with various forms of addiction than I’ve had in the last couple of years combined. But when I tell them what they need to do in order to get their act together they either don’t hear me, don’t want to hear me or actually they are in denial about the fact that they are in the throws of a disease that wants to not only kill them but destroy everyone around them. There are some who do listen and they are doing pretty well right now (you know who you are).

The disease of addiction (includes alcoholism) is cunning, baffling and powerful. If not handled it causes insanity…been there done that. When diagnosed as an addict or alcoholic you are told it is a disease and no amount of human will power will help you overcome it, thus the reason for my introduction about my triathlons…I have a tremendous amount of will power and it didn’t do jack-crap to help me handle my disease.

I’ve been asked several times over the years; “why can some people, who once seemed to be in the throws of alcoholism or drug addiction, just quit and never pick up again, where others require treatment, counseling, 12 Step meetings and God?” My experience tells me that those who quit and stay quit, either never crossed the line into the world of addiction (but were probably pretty close), have switched addictions, or they are living the miserable life of a dry drunk and/or addict. I believe we all have so many drinks, drugs, bets, porn exposures, compulsive buys, food binging and purging experiences, etc… prior to stepping over the line and some of us have a higher propensity for addiction than others.

The bottom line is this. If you or a loved one can’t quit whatever you are in bondage to then there is a good chance you have an addiction and just like any other disease, there is treatment available in order to keep the disease in check one day at a time. When a person is told they are diabetic they are normally put on medication for the diabetes. And if the diabetic takes his or her medication the way they are supposed to take it, and combine it with the correct diet, there is good reason to think they will keep the disease in check a day at a time. The same holds true for any addiction and the best treatment for addiction is a daily dose of surrendering to God, walking the 12 Spiritual Steps and acquiring the willingness to listen to and be helped by others.

Here is the deal, if you are wondering whether or not you have a problem…people without an addiction problem normally don’t “wonder” if they have a drinking or an addiction problem. Let me repeat that, people who don’t have a problem do not call me wondering if they have a problem. People without a problem don’t get drunk everytime they drink. People without a problem don’t have to sneak, lie and cheat. People without a problem do not let their marriages and relationships with their kids get destroyed. People without a problem, do not ever swear “this is the last day” and then break their promise to themself day after day after day.

When I was in the throws of addiction I would have taken a bullet for anyone in my family because I loved them so much, but I could not stop drinking and drugging for the same family I loved so much. Addiction is a disease and can only be whipped a day at a time with the right “medicine” just like any other disease…believe me, I tried whipping it with will power and mind over matter and it darn near cost me everything.

Now I need to get to bed and get some rest in preparation for a 2 hour workout in the morning.

is to get it better than today.” These are words from Huey Lewis and The News’ song ‘Jacob’s Ladder.” I can remember listening to the cassette tape of their album “Fore”…yes cassette tape…over and over once I got into recovery. The two songs I clung to were this one and “Hip to Be Square.” Jacob’s Ladder” reminded me of the 12 Steps I was attempting to begin and “Hip to be Square;” well, I was trying to convince myself it was no longer hip to drink and drug.

As a life coach and a lifelong fan and supporter of people trying to attain their dreams I am convinced if you get tomorrow better than today and string a few thousand days like that together,or maybe even one hundred, you will achieve your dreams.

In my experience of working with others over the pasts several years I have found:

1. Not everyone cares about improving and getting better. Often “comfort” (no matter how bad the “comfort” is) becomes their worst friend and/or enemy.

2. Some enjoy bitching about their life circumstances with no desire to do anything to change them.

3. Some talk a great talk but never walk it…these people are the ones who have the same complaints about people, places and things…year after year after year. They don’t realize they are the problem.

4. Others want to change but are paralyzed by the failures of the past and/or old beliefs and don’t realize it is very difficult to overcome these obstacles without help from others.

5. Some have no clue what it means to go after goals and dreams because a parent told them they were worthless at least once a week or more while growing up and they bought into it.

But for the people who want to change, it is all about creating a plan of improvement and developing a desire to execute the plan, then executing it and getting better one day at a time.

For a simple formula to help you with the attainment of your dreams and goals check out the quick synopsis of my P.E.A.C.E. acrostic on the EagleLaunch home page under the “About EagleLaunch” tab: http://www.eaglelaunch.com/about-eaglelaunch.

Keep it simple and try developing an attitude of getting tomorrow better than today. Challenge yourself to do the next right thing on a daily basis. There will be failures and setbacks, but view them as rungs on the ladder you are climbing; learn from them and move on.

P.S. A great way to track your progress in getting tomorrow better than today is to journal. I started journaling years ago and it is pretty cool to occasionally look back and observe the improvement or lack there of…if you see what I am saying.

James 1:22 “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”

One of the greatest tools I was given in the infant stages of my sobriety was the serenity prayer:

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change (other people, places and things), the courage to change the things I can (me and my thinking) and the wisdom to know the difference. (Please note that the words in parenthesis are my thoughts.)

Serenity in the Adriatic Sea

I found if I could live this simple prayer, to the best of my ability every day, then I would have serenity without drugs, booze or other addicting things…go figure. And for you non-addicts it means you can have serenity without having to find new homes, more money, more debt, jobs, cars, relationships, restaurants, clothes, etc…

The key to working this prayer is to do it in the order in which it is written. Notice I said working because it takes work to have serenity.

As a result of working the principals of this prayer on a daily basis I am able to keep my bad moments as bad moments and I no longer allow them to turn into bad days, weeks, months, years, decades etc… This prayer has taught me how to deal with life on life’s terms. It has taught me how to do what the good book says. But, like I said before, it takes work and for me it takes work on a daily basis.

Let’s take a look at how we can “work” this prayer.

The first sentence merely means we need to accept other people, places and things for what they are and understand we cannot change “them” unless they want to be changed. Accepting does not mean we like what is going on but it allows us to let go and not let others consume our precious brain cells. I am a firm believer in attraction vs. promotion as well as living the change you want to see in the world; “you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make them drink…but you can make them awful thirsty.” Just don’t forget you cannot make them drink. If you are having trouble accepting things you cannot change try praying daily for the willingness to accept the situation and pray for good things to happen for that other person, place or thing or otherwise it will drive you nuts…been there done that.

The second sentence is all about changing ourselves which is the only thing we can change. More specifically we need to change our thinking because our actions are a result of our thinking. As an alcoholic and addict I found early on that I had a thinking problem and not a drinking problem. The best way to change our thinking is to create boundaries to keep the people, places and things that cause us to go back to our old thinking out of our lives. The best way to kill anything is to quit feeding it. We then need to surround ourselves with people, places and things that think the way we want to think. Lastly we need to work a program (I would suggest the 12 Steps) which involves daily surrender to God through a morning prayer and devotional time, ongoing inventory in order to keep our spirit clean and the willingness to get out of ourselves and serve others.

The third sentence “the wisdom to know the difference” simply happens if we work the first two sentences the best we can. Yes, wisdom happens but it takes work. Alot of people confuse knowledge with wisdom. Knowledge is knowing the facts whereas wisdom is applying the facts. I know a lot of knowledgeable Christians that are miserable because they choose not to “do what it says” as James talks about in the scripture above.

So what is your serenity looking like these days? Try doing what it says in the serenity prayer and serenity will happen in spite of yourself.

2 Peter 1:vs-2&4; “May God give you more and more grace and peace as you grow in your knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord.(2) And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s coruption caused by human desires.(4)” (NLT)

Every morning I go to my study to do my prayer and devotion. This is something I started when I got sober and I’ve found this practice lends greatly to my ability to stay sober while growing closer to God one day at a time. It is also a great escape from the “world’s corruption” and in turn helps me surrender my “human desires” to God first thing out of the gates everyday. (I love reading Peter’s scripture verses because he speaks in terms I can relate to.)

Over the past several weeks during my devotional time, I have been joined by a beautiful red cardinal. From sunrise to sunset my bird friend tries to fly into my study via the windows. He sits on a perch outside the window, flies into the glass pane, then I hear a “thud”, he drops to the ground, looks dazed and confused but always flies back to the perch in preparation for his next mission. He does this all day long.

This bird is so symbolic of what many of us do with our lives especially those who are battling any type of addiction or brokenness. We keep doing things the same way expecting different results and the results never change. I believe the definition of this behavior is insanity. A bird, with it’s birdbrain, has an excuse for acting this way but as human beings we have no excuse.

I know people who are miserable at this very moment because they are trying to control something they have absolutely no control over and most of the time what they are trying to control is either an addiction or another human being. Those suffering from addictions will either die or end up bankrupt in all aspects of their lives if they don’t admit powerlessness or lack of control over their addiction. Co-dependents of addicts and alcoholics are the greatest at trying over and over to control something that is uncontrollable, (i.e. the addict/alcoholic). They keep flying into that “window” over and over and over.

One of the best pieces of advice I received when I was in early recovery and working the first step was to not only say to myself that I was powerless over alcohol and drugs, but that I was powerless over other people, places and things and more importantly…I WAS NOT GOD. I was also told to turn the things I was in turmoil about over to God on a daily or more frequent basis because HE WAS GOD. I can’t, God can, I think I will let him, is a saying I’ve used quite often during my recovery.

Over the years, my morning prayer and devotional time has allowed me to draw closer to God and farther away from things I have no control over. I’ve witnessed my former “birdbrain” transformed into a brain that allows me to discern quite rapidly what I can control (me and my thoughts, words and deeds) and what I cannot control (other people places and things).

Where are you today? Are you trying to control things that are out of your control? If so, try spending more time with God and Godly people and less time with the people places and things in your head and you will slowly begin experiencing a grace and peace like never before. “May God give you more and more grace and peace as you grow in your knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord. (2 Peter 1:2 NLT)

It wasn’t too long ago where I would have let this beautiful bird with his little birdbrain drive me nuts, but instead I’ve chosen to make this cardinal my friend as he serves as a reminder of what I used to be like and can still be today if I don’t continue to do the things I need to do and in turn control what I can control and leave the rest to God.

“Now the Lord is the Spirit and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” 2 Corinthians 3:17 (NIV)

I can remember many years ago when I was immersed in my life as an alcoholic and addict. I would have these brief moments where I knew what I was doing was wrong and in a roundabout way I would ask God to “free” me from this bondage I was in. But due to the disease process of addiction I did not have what it took mentally and physically to stay straight long enough for Him to “free” me. Then came an intervention and a 5 week stay at a treatment center and I slowly began to feel what it meant to be free.

As the scripture verse above says “where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” So, in other words as Christians who’ve accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior we have access to this freedom thru the Holy Spirit 24/7.

For those of us with baggage from the past, getting in touch with that freedom is not always easy.

I reflect back to my early days of recovery, and the hopeless feeling I had, and as a last ditch effort I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior. When I did this I felt no different, but when I started hanging around others who had experienced the transforming powers of Jesus…I would feel the freedom. During my morning prayer and devotional time…I would feel the freedom. During AA meetings…I would feel the freedom. When I talked to my sponsor…I would feel the freedom. When I got out of myself and helped others…I would feel the freedom.

During the first few years of my sobriety the “freedom feeling” was fleeting and transient. But the more effort I put toward doing the right things the longer the feeling would last.

Then I began to seriously work the 12 Steps and the “freedom feeling” from doing the “surrender or give up steps” (1 thru 3) during my morning devotional time, began to last longer into the day. Getting through the “clean-up” steps (4 thru 9) eventually opened the door to a new freedom and happiness that became the rule rather than the exception.

Continuously doing the steps, especially the “grow up & out” steps (10 thru 12), allows me to keep God in control and garbage out of my life (steps 10-11) while helping others gain access to that “freedom feeling” (step 12). Doing this a day at a time allows me to stay in touch with the Holy Spirit and feel free no matter what the circumstance. Please note…this is a process and not an event!

All of us who are on this Jesus walk have different times when we finally “arrive” to a life of freedom. And you know you’ve arrived when the “crap” of day to day living happens and instead of letting it take your freedom and joy away by creating a bad day, week, month or year…you simply have a bad moment.

If you’re struggling with your serenity right now and garbage is in your way of connecting to the Holy Spirit, I suggest you draw closer to God by increasing your morning prayer and devotional time, get closer to those who are “free,” get yourself to church and 12 Step meetings, work the steps whether you are an addict or not, and get out of yourself by helping others.

Having a permanent “freedom feeling” is a much more enjoyable way to live and as an addict I am so glad I gave up the temporary “freedom” drugs and alcohol gave me and replaced it with the eternal freedom of living a life fueled by the Spirit.

James 4:1-10 (NIV); “What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You want something but don’t get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who choses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. Or do you think Scripture says without reason that the spirit he caused to live in us envies intensely? But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.”

The other night I was at a 12 Step Meeting and the topic was resentment. Most people in recovery know that one of the primary reasons we drink, drug or act out is because of resentments. Some people drink their entire life because of something that happened to them when they were 5 years old. There are “normal” people who carry resentments for a lifetime also and they don’t drink but you can tell who they are because they are angry and miserable and always find a way to blame others for their lot in life.

Resentments are from the devil and as long as we give into them bad things will happen and the devil will be happy.

When you look at the scripture from James above, the 2nd verse (3rd sentence) kind of hits the nail on the head. We want something and don’t get it or we get something we don’t want. Wanting what others have or wanting more or less than what we already have and/or comparing ourselves to others is a sure fire way for jealousy and resentment to creep in and it usually manifests itself through an angry spirit where we “quarrel and fight” with the world and/or between our ears. This is suicide for an alcoholic or addict and plain misery for the “normal” person.

James tells us that the genesis of anger and resentment is our “friendship with the world.” He also tells us “You do not have because you do not ask God.” What he is saying is we are seeking our happiness from the world instead of God and that is a no-win proposition.

At the end of these verses from James, he gives us a solution and it is pretty simple;

1. “Submit yourself to God” (not the world).
2. “Resist the devil and he will flee from you” (tell the devil to take a hike…I often use stronger words than that)
3. “Come near to God and he will come near to you” (let go of the world and grab onto God).
4. “Wash your hands, you sinners and purify your hearts you double-minded” (repent your shortcomings to God).
5. “Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and joy to gloom” (turn ALL your anger over to God).
6. “Humble yourselves before the Lord and he will lift you up” (by doing the 5 steps above, we put ourselves in a mental and spiritual state i.e. humble/humility, where God can work with us and lift us up no matter what the circumstance). If you want to be relatively happy, joyous and free the majority of the time do the above steps early and often throughout your day (these are steps 10 and 11 from the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous). You will slowly find yourself being lifted up and above your worldly tendencies.

“Proverbs 25:28; “Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control.”

(This is a continuation from my previous blog about the two steps in achieving a new goal; start and continue. The next several posts will deal with what it takes to continue.)

Has the following scenario ever happened to you; you make a decision to change, you pray about it, God actually starts intervening on your behalf through other people, places and things but you are unable to control your urges to go back to your old ways? You begin “constructing new walls to your “city” as Solomon talks about in Proverbs 25, and then the walls begin to weaken and eventually they come crumbling down…again.

One of the keys in keeping our walls strong and in place is to develop self-control and self-control only happens for me if I have a PLAN. My past of virtually destroying and losing everything serves as a great reminder to me how much self-control I have. My self-control is totally dependent upon having and working a plan.

Plans give us boundaries, they allow us to keep our priorities straight, they give us the ability to say no to outside forces that try to pull us away from the plan.

The planning process initially requires the willingness to commit an hour or two and sometimes more, to prioritizing what needs to happen and then envisioning what you want to happen and then reducing it to writing…i.e. transforming the dreams into goals. For example, maybe your number one goal for this year is to become a better spouse. If this is the case, then you need to take time to envision what this looks like and reduce this picture to writing. There is something “magical” about writing things down. For me, writing somehow indelibly etches the goal in my brain and the more I write the better my chances become at achieving my goals.

(I carry a journal with me everywhere I go and I’ve done this for years. I am always writing things down…keeping the plan fresh…keeping me “bound” to my plan. In this journal I have a “master” goal page dedicated to the various goals I’ve set for the year. This allows me to take a quarterly “look back” in order to track my progress.)

The next step to effective planning is to commit an hour every Sunday towards creating a day-by-day plan for the following week. Planning the days in hourly increments is the most effective way to stay “bound” to the plan. I find this hour on Sunday also helps me better prepare for everything I have going on in my life throughout the week. It prevents me from over-committing and/or under-committing, it keeps me on time and on task during the week.

Next, the planning process involves the daily ritual of reviewing the plan for the new day, in the morning, (preferably after morning prayer and devotion…during which the plan is committed to the Lord…see Proverbs 16:3 and Mark 11:24).

Finally, as the day is about to close, it is important to take a few minutes to take an inventory of the day and make any needed adjustments to the plan for tomorrow. The final step involves prayer where we thank God for His help with our plan for that day and seek His help and guidance for tomorrow’s plan.

I love the quote by Lewis Carroll, “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.”

Make a decision today to decide where you want to go by developing a plan. Make a decision to “continue to continue” by planning weekly and daily. If you do this you are “bound” to see major improvements in your life.

2 Timothy 1:7; “For God did not give us a spirit of timidity (fear), but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.” (NIV)

The other day my wife was looking out the back window of our home observing our new “rescue dog” Boyd sprinting across the yard having fun with his “brother” Onyx. My wife commented; “five months ago that dog could barely walk.” Yes, when we rescued Boyd from the animal shelter, he was fat, lazy and very unambitious.

A couple of days after Boyd left the animal shelter and came to his new home, I took him for a walk and we got about 200 yards into the walk and he sat down and would not go any farther because he was exhausted. Today, after a good night’s sleep, Boyd is up before dawn hunting animals in our woods and spends most of his time hanging out and hunting with our lab/setter Onyx. Boyd has probably lost 25 pounds and looks very svelte these days and is an awesome dog.

Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to help many people in their struggles with addiction, co-dependency or other obstacles in life. Those who overcome their obstacles find a way to break free from their past and their bad habits and those who remain in bondage remain slaves to their past, or like my dog prior to his rescue, they continue to live in their self-made “shelters” of isolation.

Unlike my dog Boyd, as human beings, we have the ability to choose whether or not we stay stuck in our old way of living. But, like my dog Boyd, once we break free from the past we find ourselves doing things we never dreamed of doing.

In Timothy, we are told a spirit of timidity and/or fear is not of God. God gives us the spirit of power, love and self-discipline. What is interesting is that those three traits are what I see in Boyd today and it was simply because we “rescued” him from his past life and future fate as an animal shelter dog.

If you are stuck in a rut and find yourself thinking the same old thoughts and acting out the same old actions and feeling the same old way, it is time to allow God to “rescue” you from your past and your “shelter.” God sent his son to die for all of our sins, and to give us His Spirit of power, love and self-discipline and the ability to break free from fear and the timid spirit our past and “shelters” create.

How do we overcome this timid spirit? How do we rescue ourselves from our self-induced “shelter?”

First we need to surrender to God daily by admitting we have a timid Spirit, a Spirit of fear, a Spirit stuck in the past, and most likely a Spirit that is very self-centered and self-focused and has created a “shelter” around us. Then we need to seek the Spirit’s help through daily prayer and scripture reading and in turn accept the power, love and self-discipline a life led by the Spirit will generate. We need to remind ourselves to tap into the Spirit early and often throughout the day.

Then we need to develop the new habits my dog Boyd has developed…he eats right, he sleeps right, he exercises right, and he hangs out with other fun dogs who do not live in an animal shelter (his brother Onyx).

P.E.A.C.E.

P.S. Although my final sentence about Boyd’s new habits may seem a bit corny, those habits are attributes that usually separate “timid/sheltered Christians from loving, powerful and self-disciplined Christians. If your prayer life and scripture reading isn’t helping you break free from your shelter, try focusing on taking care of your body and find some, fun, shelterless Christians to hang out with.

One of the challenges I have faced during my Christian/recovery walk is the willingness to allow God to have all of me. This means the good, the great, the bad and the ugly. It is hard for God to do his work through me when I am still holding onto old stuff. As most of you know, I am a big proponent of the 12 Steps. The steps basically lay out a “step by step” approach to clean up all the wreckage our past behavior has created and gives us hope in living a new, transformed life.

The first 3 steps are all about surrendering to God…”I can’t, he can, I think I’ll let him.” Steps 4 and 5 are the first 2 steps in the “clean up” phase which are steps 4 thru 9 and involve taking an honest look at ourselves through a personal inventory (step 4) and then sharing that inventory with God and someone we can trust (step 5). Steps 6 and 7 are what I refer to as the lost steps. Many of us take our personal inventory and give it to God and then immediately make amends to everyone we have harmed (steps 8 and 9) and then we are off to the “grow up steps;” steps 10 thru 12.

Steps 6 and 7 are steps that cannot be bypassed if we truly want God to have all of us. Step 6 “Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character” and Step 7 “Humbly asked him to remove our shortcomings” is what separates a recovering person at peace from the recovering person who is in constant turmoil.

For me, I need to do steps 6 and 7 every single day or I start messing up again. From my personal inventory I know where my weaknesses are and it is thru steps 6 and 7 that I give them to God daily. All of my weaknesses i.e. “character defects” derive from fear and the results of my fears vary but they usually come in the form of pride, envy, anger, lust, greed, gluttony and sloth, you know…the seven (7) deadly sins. I learned a long time ago, if I didn’t turn my fears over to God each and every day, my day transitions into a day run by EGO (Easing God Out) and those days are always a struggle for me.

If you find yourself constantly reverting back to old behavior in order to handle life’s challenges, then my guess is you need to take a serious look at your defects of character and write down all the crap you do that you wish you didn’t do. As I mentioned before, all these behaviors derive from fear and they all can be classified in the 7 deadly sins. And, oh by the way, they didn’t name them the 7 deadly sins unless they were indeed deadly.

If you want to hear a real life version of doing the 6th step, I will be interviewing a fellow recovery friend this weekend at the Next Step Worship Celebration at Ginghamsburg Church. My friend just completed her first round with step 6 and will share with all of us what it was like and what it means to her new faith journey. The Next Step begins at 6:30pm and Ginghamsburg Church is located in Tipp City, Ohio on County Road 25A, just west of interstate 75, and south of the State Route 571 exit.

I was talking with a friend the other day and shared the fact that I felt as though I hit a dry spell in my faith walk. No matter how many different ways I prayed and read scripture it was like God wasn’t listening or talking to me. I was seeking guidance about something in my life and I kept getting nothing. My friend shared with me the fact that God was probably allowing me to walk in the desert in order to motivate me to reach out more.

So I decided to reach out more. I increased my prayer time and even went to a total surrender position of being on all four’s while praying. Then it happened. A couple of days ago during my prayer time God spoke to me and he said; “Jay instead of asking for help from me, why don’t you ask how you can help me?” It was like I got hit by a ton of bricks. Can you say selfish, self-centered, self-seeking….i.e. ego??????

Sometimes we get so hung up on our own shh…stuff that we forget what we are here to do and that is to be the hands and feet of God. A life run by EGO (Easing God Out) is a sure-fire way of allowing satan to mess with our minds. Ego can manifest itself in so many different ways and can overtake us even when we are praying, reading scripture and worshiping. Especially when our prayer, reading and worship is all focused on helping ourselves. Ego wants us to put ourselves first. God tells us to love Him first and to love others like we love ourselves. If this is the way it is supposed to be, then there is no room for ego when it comes to living the Christian life.

I decided to go back to the basics and started praying the 3rd step prayer from page 63, of the 3rd edition of “The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous” each and every morning. This is something I did in early sobriety and for some reason got away from it. The prayer is short, sweet and most of all “ego-deflating.”

“God, I offer myself to Thee–to build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt. Relieve me of the bondage of self, that I may better do Thy will. Take away my difficulties, that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help of Thy Power, Thy Love, and Thy Way of life. May I do Thy will always!” AMEN

The 3rd step prayer is the greatest ego-deflating prayer ever written. Amazing how smooth the week has gone since I’ve been deflating the old ego and offering myself up to God a day at a time

If you’ve been seeking God’s help and you don’t feel like he is responding try asking God how you can be of help to Him. This life is not about our plans and hopes and dreams, it is about fulfilling God’s purpose by helping him out through our plans, hopes and dreams.

Proverbs 19:21; “Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.”
