A Gift We All Have

Recently I was talking with my wife and she was marveling at how many people know our multiply handicapped 22 year old son.  Our son cannot talk, he still wears a diaper and is pretty much total care.  He has gone to school and some type of special program for most of his life.  Along the way he has obviously made many friends and he hasn’t said a word.

He has a smile that is magnetic.  He does not know hate.  He often goes up to strangers, gives them a smile, grabs their hand and goes for a walk.  He totally trusts everyone, he doesn’t care what the color of a person’s skin is, it makes no difference what sins one may have commited.  He could care less about the type of car you drive, the house you live in or how much money you make.  If he smiles at you and you smile at him he has just created another friend.

How simple yet full our lives could be if we didn’t allow our brains to cause us to complicate things.  Being kind and loving of our fellow man is not something we learn or earn or pay for.  It is something that is born into each and everyone of us.  Try not talking, judging and comparing for a day and you will get a feel for how my son feels every day of his life.

My son has taught me that this life is not about making, taking, complaining or consuming.  This life is about giving love to one another.
