“Be still and know that I am God” Psalm 46:10. Taking time to be still every day is a key component of my recovery program. Years ago I was told about the importance of having a morning recovery program. What started as a quick prayer and a devotional read that took less than 15 minutes has now turned into an hour or more of prayer, scripture reading, journaling and additional reading. This is my time to get in touch with the Holy Spirit. Jesus often went off to be alone and came back and did some of his most powerful work: the Sermon on the Mount, the transfiguration and of course His crucifixion.
Are you spending time alone? Are you spending time getting in touch with the Holy Spirit? Are you filling your soul with the Truth which comes from the written word of God? I have rarely seen a person go back to the old addictive life style if they are working a solid morning program.
Although my morning program today is a key to my sobriety, it is an even bigger key in allowing me to maximize my abilities in the various roles I am responsible for throughout my day. In one of my daily prayers I ask God to help me be a great person, husband, father, family-man, leader and friend. I try to live in a way that would attract others to my source of strength and energy which is Him. Spending time being still and getting filled with the Spririt is key. How much time are you spending alone with your power source?
I just finished an hour of devotion (it is now 6:30am) and I am getting ready to go on a 5 mile run to get even closer to my power source. By 8:00am I will be ready to go out and see what God has in store for me today.
